So, Wesen bounty hunters and Council-sanctioned hits are a thing now. I love it. There's also a tip hotline, which I find hilarious due to its juxtaposition of modern and traditional. The Wesen Council represents one of the highest and oldest institutions in Wesen culture—a regulatory bastion with a penchant for corruption and questionable decision-making. It represents the secrecy and mystery surrounding Wesen, and could easily be labeled as "the old guard."
But it also has a concerned citizens hotline. The council's pet bounty hunter uses a tablet to confirm his kills and collect his rewards, and at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they were dispersed via Pop Money or Chase Quickpay or something. On one hand, such details aren't that weird, because Wesen and the council that oversees their daily lives aren't living in a vacuum. It's 2015. Technology makes business efficient, which is important when you're responsible for a population that's no longer cloistered in small, secret communities, but spread all over the world.
On the other hand, Rosalee sitting at her kitchen table dialing into the hotline to calmly ask whether there was a licensed killer wandering around her city on behalf of the council—no big!—was pretty jarring. For as much as Wesen have assimilated themselves into the human world, they're still a separate people, which is something that Grimm has grown increasingly delighted to explore.
Juliette's accidental evolution into a Hexenbiest—the sworn enemy of Grimm everywhere, or something—opens a door between the Grimm, Wesen, and human worlds. Henrietta claimed that there's nothing she could do, and that Juliette's new powers won't be going anywhere; Juliette will just have to learn to control them. Henrietta also hinted at Nick having a sort of biological vendetta against Hexenbiest, making their continued relationship more than a little awkward.
We don't often hear about the physical aspects of Nick's Grimm status. We know that he looks different to Wesen and we know that there are certain Wesen whose woge state he can see that default humans can't. He has super powers and specialness, and we know all about how becoming a Grimm totally disrupted Nick and Juliette's lives. Yet the couple has always managed to overcome the problems that Nick's legacy throws at them.
I'm confident that Nick and Juliette will survive this rough patch as well, but the challenges they potentially face have evolved. The biggest threat to Juliette may no longer be some outside force. In fact, she held her own just fine when Manticore Boba Fett rolled into her living room. Grimm's early seasons suffered from the habitual reliance on Juliette being a distressed damsel of the week, and she's always been presented as the outsider among her small group of friends. Neither Wesen nor Grimm, she's long been stuck in the middle, struggling to avoid death or dismemberment due to no real fault of her own.
While I'm uncomfortable with the notion that Juliette's powers are a gift and she's a better character for it because that line of thought implies that Juliette wasn't good enough on her own—that the worst thing to be on this show is a boring, unmagical human—this storyline is definitely a positive for Juliette. She's been brought into the fold and she has something to do other than react to all the craziness that surrounds her. She can also fight back, with powers equal to (and in some cases, superior to) any supernatural attackers who may want to use her against Nick, and she's no longer at risk of being turned into a helpless pawn every other week.
These developments are great for Juliette (and, by extension, Nick) but then there's the pesky Grimm versus Hexenbiest thing and we know that the transition is going to be far from easy. Juliette seems to be tentatively accepting her status, but we know Nick isn't going to take it well. Will it be enough a blow that he endangers Juliette or compromises their relationship? I don't think I buy that idea as a real possibility, but now that Grimm is waving the biological imperative stuff around, we can't really know how things might play out. One thing is certain, though: Nick+Juliette as a Grimm+Hexenbiest love story is definitely going to shake things up.
